Cardiac Rehabilitation FAQ: Answering Your Questions

The following are some common concerns we hope to address with our cardiac rehabilitation FAQ, as well as some reasons for pursuing cardiac rehabilitation with Axis Therapies.

#1- What is cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehab is a supervised program consisting of exercise, education, and counseling, designed to help a person recover from a heart attack, heart surgery, or other types of heart surgeries. The procedure can even help treat congestive heart failure. Cardiac rehabilitation is divided into 3, sometimes 4, phases that involve a combination of inpatient and outpatient care.

  • Phase I is an inpatient program and can start when the patient is in the hospital.
  • Phase II occurs after a patient has been discharged from the hospital, meaning they are no longer in need of constant, medical supervision. The goal of outpatient care is to help heart patients regain strength, mitigate cardiac symptoms, and prevent the onset of future heart issues. Phase II does require a doctor’s prescription.
  • Phase III or Phase IV also requires medical clearance. Both phases are dedicated to long-term maintenance of the patient’s new lifestyle.

#2-Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Yes, and surprisingly, this is one of the biggest reasons for patients not going. Doctors may occasionally suggest it as a method of cardiac intervention, but it’s difficult to participate in something you know very little about. But if you are keeping an open mind and are willing to give it a go, ask your primary for that referral.

#3- What if I am too sick to go?

Talk to your medical team. Be transparent about your physical symptoms. If those presiding over your health determine that you can safely participate in the program, ask them about any of your limitations and how hard you can reasonably push yourself. As a provider of concierge homecare services, we can take the guesswork out of your decision by bringing our team and resources to you!

#4- Does cardiac rehab impose age restrictions?

No. Cardiac rehab is about fostering a healthier, happier life for you and yours. Whether you are 45 or 85, living and breathing is a precious gift, and if you cherish life, you will do everything you can to preserve your overall well-being. Your medical team can discuss how cardiac rehabilitation Greenwich Ct can be modified for your age and physical capacity.
